Prototyping

Prototyping, also known as POC (proof of concept) consists of designing intermediate and therefore incomplete versions of a software program or website.

The prototypes are designed to test usability before the actual computer programming phase. As part of an intervention ergonomicThe prototyping phase allows testing the use and usability of a product with users (user testing).

A prototype differs from a wireframe model by simulating functionality with fictitious or real data. Several types and levels of refinement are possible, depending on the design approach for a software program or website. Prototyping is part of an iterative interface design process, particularly in user-centered design. It aims to progressively improve the interface by analyzing end-user behavior when they use the product (see also user testing).

The initial mockups designed at the start of the project are often static (with no interactivity) and minimalist; they may be limited to defining the main functionalities and content areas, and take the form of a paper mockup. Then, as iterations progress and interaction is added, the prototype moves closer to the final interface in terms of both interaction and graphics.

Prototyping (or mock-up creation) is the fundamental method for designing user interfaces in computer ergonomics. Its value lies in materializing the interface, and therefore the software or website, and it serves as a reference for the various project stakeholders who, through this process, will agree on a common language. The prototype can also be used for product marketing and demonstration purposes by sales teams before the official product launch.
