Big data: an ethical issue?

In its Geopolitis program of January 17, 2015, RTS (Swiss Radio and Television) interviewed Me Sylvain Métille, a lawyer specializing in... risks of big data and the challenges of protection of personal data.
- issues and opportunities
- risks and nuisances
- Protection of personal data
What is big data?
The term "big data" refers to vast datasets that are large, complex, and difficult to manage with traditional data management tools. This massive amount of data comes from various sources such as social media, connected devices, online transactions, sensors, and more. Big data is characterized by the famous "3Vs":
- volume (large amount of data)
- variety (different types and formats data)
- and velocity (speed at which data is generated and must be processed).
Big data analysis aims to extract meaningful information, patterns and hidden trends to make informed decisions and gain a competitive advantage in various fields, such as marketing, health, finance, logistics, etc.
What do we do with our data?
According to Geopolitis, a program on RTS (Radio Télévision Suisse), it seems that we have entered an era dominated by data (the Big Data era).
Big data is where enormous quantities of data are collected, processed, and analyzed thanks to the rise of the internet, the proliferation of connected devices, and advances in storage and computing. This massive amount of data, measured in zettabytes, offers countless possibilities in sectors such as transportation, work, medicine, commerce, and security, in our increasingly interconnected societies.
However, Big Data also raises concerns regarding the protection of personal data. Misuse could have damaging consequences. This raises the question of the ethical use of this massive amount of data. Should ethics be placed at the heart of the vast array of possibilities offered by Big Data? This is what we will analyze in this edition of Geopolitis.
In this video, guest Sylvain Métille, a lawyer specializing in data protection and lecturer at the University of Lausanne, will provide his expertise on this crucial topic.
